Written by James Maltese
Nashville songwriter James Maltese weaves a personal thread of influences into his writing style. From Guy Clark and Townes Van Zandt to Ernest Hemingway and John Steinbeck, James has always been drawn to the writer’s writers – those crafters of stories that say it like it is with honest grit and realism.
Through music and literature, James became inspired by the stories and struggles of the men and women who pioneered the hard-lived days of the American west. From this came “The Painted Lady Of The Plains”, an original concept album that tells a story unearthed from the dust that still covers those times – when the core human qualities of love and hope were the textures and brush strokes that defined a world now framed in a poetic past.
James has been recognized in American Songwriter Magazine, is a semi-finalist in both the 2022 and 2023 International Songwriting Competition and won the 22nd Annual Nashville Songwriters Association International Song Contest Lyric-Only Contest.

The Art
“The Cowboy Mona Lisa”
This haunting and beautiful painting by artist Mara Light brings to life the rich, complex textures of the woman whose story weaves through “The Painted Lady Of The Plains” album. An intimate portrait of a mysterious female figure, the image invites the question: “Who is the Painted Lady of the Plains?” This pairing of visual art with the art of songwriting creates the full experience. Both tell a tale.

Beneath the Grooves
From The Songwriter
My favorite novels always share one thing: they carry hidden threads of theme and symbolism that deepen the story. “The Painted Lady of the Plains” is written in the same way. Beneath the cowboy ballads and dancehall tunes, every lyric carries the weight of a bigger story — the haunting tale of the Painted Lady and the Cowboy.
The Album is a Song
This record isn’t just twelve tracks — it plays like one continuous song, a 34-minute journey. Each song has its role: some as verses, some as choruses, others as bridges.
The opening songs set the scene like a novel’s first chapter. “Bootleggin’” bursts in like a first chorus — fast and full of life. Storytelling returns with quieter verses through “Ride Easy.” Then comes “Devil’s Pass,” a storm of sound and drama that breaks the story wide open. Leyton Robinson’s stark a cappella reprise of “Moonlight on My Love” serves as the bridge, now shifting the meaning of the song from hopeful vow to mourning prayer. “Letter from Lubbock” is the last exchange between the lovers. Finally, “Legend of the Lady” lingers like a closing chorus that doesn’t want to end, as if the band keeps playing long after the saloon’s lights should’ve gone dark.
Dust
Dust is the album’s villain — more ruthless than any outlaw. It sweeps through the songs as dust devils, sawdust, and stardust. It sifts through old plank walls of the local saloon and fills a cowboy’s boots with a harsh reminder of endless dusty days. Like the dust bowl itself, it is inescapable.
Timeless Voices
Most of the story is told by a narrator. But at key moments – “Share This Dance,” “‘Neath Those Western Stars,” “Ride Easy,” and “Moonlight on My Love” — the voices shift, drawing you directly into the thoughts and hearts of the Lady and the Cowboy themselves.
Dreams of Gold
Dreams sparkle through the record like sunlight on a gemstone, each facet revealing something new. The Lady dreams she is a sparrow, flying beyond her dust-blown world. The Cowboy dreams of California — convinced the golden meadows hold their promised land. In “Moonlight on My Love,” the Lady wonders what happens when a dream reaches the river’s end, while the Cowboy believes love itself hides in dreams until someone sets it free. Only in “Devil’s Pass” does he realize too late that his truest dream — the Painted Lady — was right beside him all along.
